Coolant Q: My car has a red coolant (antifreeze). What coolant should I use? A: Generally it is a good idea to stick with the car manufacturer's recommendations. Many new cars come with a long life coolant. Claims are that they last 5 years or 100,000 miles. This does not meant they areĀ maintenance free. You still need to check the condition of your coolant on a regular basis.
Copper/Brass or Aluminum Radiator? Q: Which is better: A copper-brass or an aluminum radiator? A: Copper is better for heat transfer. To get equivalent heat transfer, an aluminum radiator will have thicker fins. Aluminum weighs about 1/3 as much as copper. To get equal core performance and geometry, the aluminum core will have more material, but will still weigh about 27% less than the copper brass. If weight is a major concern, aluminum is a good place to start.
Cost is also a factor. Tooling for aluminum radiators is expensive. Thus, for high volume production, aluminum can be cost effective.
The bottom line is for heat transfer; there is no clear advantage of one over the other. It's a draw. For weight, aluminum has the advantage, at least to start. At Empire Radiator we can custom build both copper/brass and aluminum radiators to your specifications.
